In 1983 I was in Israel and courting my wife-to-be by phone. I needed a coffee cup full of asimonim, Israeli phone tokens. Why tokens and not just coins? Back then, inflation in Israel was huge and frequent retooling the coin operated phones to accomodate that year's coin currency would be prohibitively expensive. I'd have to go to the post office to buy a week's worth of asimonim (ah-see-moe-NEEM). There were Israeli comics making a good living joking about people being born, growing up, doing military service, all before copper wired phone lines would ever get to their houses. Israel became an early adopter of cellphone technology and the jokes changed to infants being handed a cellphone before the umbilical cord was cut. http://israelity.com/2009/07/12/nostalgia-sunday-asimonim/

Regarding rock and roll media, I miss album cover art. No way the YES album covers translate well to CD jewel-box sizing. The Beatles' White Album, on the other hand...

I think I'm considered ancient because I actually PAY for music instead of stealing it like most college kids today. I wish job applicants would have to honestly write down the % of songs on their MP3 player they've paid for. A large % would be a factor in my NOT wanting to hire them for a profit-based business. Notions of property and intellectual property almost seems quaint.

Damn you Chuck Musciano. I just lost a half hour on You Tube watching Dr. Hook videos!

The only Dr. Hook album I ever owned was on a thing called an 8-track (I don't think I could explain what it is. 8-tracks were a brief blip between albums and CDs). My brain still inserts a pause into the middle of "Cover of the Rolling Stone" because that is where the song was split across two tracks. Geez

Excellent post!
